Lleida will have 175 social rental homes by June 2026 thanks to an investment of 8 million euros allocated by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda through Next Generation European funds. The funds will be used to finance approximately half of the cost of the works, which amounts to 18.7 million euros.
Of these homes, 114 will be built on two municipal lots in the Magraners and Ciutat Jardà neighborhoods, and the remaining 61 will be built by private developers. Currently, there are a thousand people signed up on the waiting list as applicants for a social rental in the city. From the City Council they recognize that more subsidized housing is needed and that the debt is “historic”, but that this is a “very important” first step.
Of these new promotions, 25% of the flats will be reserved for young people up to 35 years of age and a further 25% will be reserved for “special contingencies”, highlighted the mayor of Lleida, Miquel Pueyo. In this sense, the Councilor for Culture, City and Ecological Transition, Jaume Rutllant, has specified that they will be reserved for specific emergencies, such as a need for accommodation for families affected by a fire in their building.
Both Pueyo and Rutllant, as well as the subdelegate of the Government in Lleida, José CrespÃn, and the Secretary of Housing of the Generalitat, Marina Berasategui, have visited this Monday one of the lots, located in Calle de Albi in the neighborhood of Magraners, where 30 of the 175 planned homes will be built.
The signed agreement provides for the construction of 175 homes on seven plots of which 32 will be built on Calle Enric Roca Peralta, in the Ciutat Jardà area, and the rest, i.e. 143, will be built in the Magraners neighborhood: 52 in Calle Albi and 30 in Cambrils. The 61 that will be built on a private lot will be located on Calle Vendrell, in the neighborhood of Magraners.
From the sub-delegation of the government in Lleida they emphasize that with this investment, as many social housing can be built in the city of Lleida as those built in the last ten years, a period in which 177 officially protected homes have been built, according to data from the Idescat. Despite the fact that this is a “very important†first step, Rutllant has highlighted, he acknowledges that a lot of social housing is still needed to respond to the demand from the cities.
The agreement signed between the General Directorate of Housing of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, the General Secretary of Housing of the Generalitat and the Lleida City Council is one of the 13 signed last week to finance the construction of 1,043 homes in 13 municipalities of Catalonia with a budget of 166 million euros.
