Lidl will build a warehouse in Constantí (Tarragona), with the forecast that it will come into operation from 2026. The supermarket chain has acquired a plot of about 185,000m2 to build a new logistics platform with the aim of guaranteeing its sustainable expansion in Spain.
The mayor of Constantí, Óscar Sánchez, has been “very satisfied with the arrival of Lidl in the municipality”. In addition, he explained that the consortium considers it a priority “to continue working to attract new investment and favor the arrival of new companies that, like Lidl, can be job generators for our neighbors.” In addition, he underlines that the “opportunity offered by large companies such as Lidl and its firm commitment to Constantí guarantee the work that is being done”.
According to chain sources, it is a project that will generate wealth and local employment. “It is part of the supermarket chain’s determined commitment to continue growing throughout the territory,” they point out from Lidl, in a statement issued this Monday.
The future warehouse will allow it to continue adapting its logistics resources to face its expansion plan in the rest of the state with guarantees. To this end, it plans to open three more warehouses by 2025: the first in Escúzar (Granada), which is under construction on a plot of more than 132,000m2. The second in Martorell and a third in Parla (Madrid), both of which have yet to start work on plots that exceed 126,000m2 and 145,000m2, respectively.
“In recent years we have been significantly expanding our presence in Spain thanks to the opening of new stores, a reality that also requires us to increase our logistics infrastructure with new centers from which to manage the entire assortment of products”, comments the general director of Expansion and Lidl Spain properties, Immanol Zabala.
In addition, Zambala adds that “since 2019 we have launched three warehouses in Cheste (Valencia), Agüimes (Las Palmas) and Naclares de l’Oca (Vitòria), and in the future we plan to open four more in Escúzar, Martorell, Parla and Constanti”.
The future stores in Martorell and Constantí will be added to the one that Lidl has had since 2003 in Montcada and Reixac (Barcelona), a town from which the supermarket chain mainly supplies its more than 70 points of sale in Catalonia and operates throughout Spain through the central offices.
With the entry of the operation of these three centers, Lidl wants to reinforce the strategic role of Catalonia as a reference logistics hub for growth in this area and the northwest of the state.
Lidl today has a structure of some 120 stores, a logistics platform and central offices in Catalonia that already employ nearly 3,900 people. The company buys Catalan products worth around 690 million euros a year from more than 170 suppliers, exporting practically a third of these purchases to around thirty countries.
With this volume of activity in the region, Lidl is responsible for more than 22,800 direct, indirect and pardoned jobs and contributes more than 1,090 million euros per year to GDP, which represents 0.56% of the total.
