The last time it rained at all in Urgell, on August 27, only 7 mm of precipitation fell. Since then, only fire has fallen from the sky, heat and more heat, as reflected in these landscapes around Altet photographed in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos.

Urgell is a region that enjoys two unique characteristics: good communications and the peace that is breathed thanks to its natural environment. But, with the lack of rain and the high temperatures, the landscape can become an oven.

This region is the setting for the Cistercian route and the Camino de Santiago (declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco), which also passes through these paths.

Agriculture is common in this part of Catalonia, as are livestock farming and the industry related to this sector. Much of the production revolves around fruit and other agricultural products.

90% of the county’s surface is cultivated land, three quarters of which is rainfed, which marks the image that is drawn in the landscape.
