The Minister of the Interior of the Generalitat, Joan Ignasi Elena, visited Mataró (Maresme) yesterday to meet with the mayor, David Bote, to announce the incorporation in the last three years of 32 agents to the Mossos d’Esquadra police station, a perennial demand of the municipal government.

Elena also thanked the Mataró City Council for its efforts in maintaining joint operations between Mossos and the Local Police and increasing the police force, which according to him “is a great advance in security.” The incorporation of the 32 new police officers in the last three promotions, for the highest police officer in Catalonia represents an increase of 25%, which places the workforce at around 140 officers.

The councilor also stressed that the progressive increase in the number of Catalan police officers will also impact Mataró. In this sense, he highlighted that this year there will be a promotion of 800 police officers, of which 1,600 are already in full convocation “until we reach the goal of 22,000 police officers by 2030.”

During her visit, Elena made some surprising statements, such as the fact that Mataró is a city whose crime rate “is lower than the average for Catalonia.” According to crime data from the Ministry of the Interior, in Catalonia until March 2023, 120,516 crimes were recorded, which has meant an increase in criminal activity of 11.3%. In Mataró, 2,020 criminal offenses were reported, which represents 0.4% more than the previous year.
