Ikea Expands into Virtual World, Hiring UK Workers for Roblox Store

Swedish retail giant Ikea is venturing into the digital realm by hiring 10 individuals from the UK and Ireland to assist with the operation of a virtual store within the popular gaming platform Roblox. This move is part of Ikea’s “Careers Done Different” campaign, aimed at showcasing potential career paths within the company.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in various roles within the virtual store, including serving meatballs in the bistro and assisting customers in selecting furniture for their virtual spaces. The hourly wage for this remote, limited contract position is set at £13.15/€14.80.

“With us, you have the opportunity to move departments, flex your skill and get promoted,” reads the application website. Ikea emphasizes career progression based on values rather than traditional qualifications. Applicants are required to answer a range of questions, including their thoughts on being transformed into pixels and how they would handle challenges such as running out of virtual hot dogs in the bistro.

Ikea is not the only company leveraging Roblox for expansion. Streaming giant Netflix has also announced its presence on the platform with the introduction of “Nextworld,” a digital theme park featuring areas, characters, and games based on popular Netflix properties like Stranger Things and One Piece.

As companies like Ikea and Netflix continue to explore virtual opportunities, the gaming platform Roblox remains a hub for innovation and creativity.
