Iberdrola and the Asturian group Exiom have joined forces to put into operation the first photovoltaic module factory in Spain and one of the first on an industrial scale in Europe.
Both companies announced this Monday that the plant, located in the Asturian municipality of Langreo, will be operational in spring and has already raised the interest of potential clients interested in solar panel suppliers of Spanish origin.
After a year of work, the first batches of solar panels have already entered production, which will be the first product to leave Langreo, although the objective is that in the future the factory can become a production point for the entire linked value chain. The renewable energies.
“The objective is to turn the country into a spearhead to lead this emerging sector from Europe. Exiom is a manufacturer with 100% Spanish capital, with origins in Asturias itself, and one of the only European groups to appear on the prestigious list of Tier 1 manufacturers,” they explain in a joint statement.
The factory represents a joint investment of 20 million euros and has a 1.2 million euro investment from the Institute for Just Transition (ITJ), through the program aimed at job-generating business projects that promote the alternative development of the just transition zones, corresponding to the 2023 call. It is expected that 115 jobs will be generated.
Likewise, it is part of Iberdrola’s plan of commitment to the development of the Langreo region, in the search for economic development projects and initiatives linked to the opportunities offered by the energy transition towards a decarbonized economy.
The energy company’s ‘Plan Lada’ aims to transform the region based on four axes: investment in clean technologies, promotion of the development of local suppliers, training and support for local entrepreneurship.
For its part, Exiom Group, which has around 300 employees, carries out its activity both in Spain and internationally.
The company currently has two solar panel manufacturing centers in China, thanks to which it has acquired sufficient experience and knowledge about production processes. In addition, it also has a factory of steel structures for photovoltaic parks, located in Langreo.
