Heavy Friday Rush Hour Traffic Worsened by Soccer Showdown at Soldier Field
Chicago, IL – May 31, 2024: Heavy Friday rush hour traffic in downtown Chicago was exacerbated by a highly-anticipated soccer match at Soldier Field. The Mexican Men’s National Team faced off against Bolivia in the first of five exhibition games in the 2024 MexTour, leading up to the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América tournament.
The traffic chaos began as the parking lots at Soldier Field opened to fans at 4 p.m., causing bumper-to-bumper congestion on DuSable Lake Shore Drive and I-55. Approximately 45,000 fans flocked to the stadium for the game, according to the Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
Despite the gridlock, some vendors took advantage of the situation by selling team merchandise to the stranded motorists. While some fans opted for public transportation to avoid the traffic, many remained unfazed, eagerly anticipating the match.
