The Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder, from Bahrain-Victorious, suffered a serious fall on the descent of the Albulapass, in the 5th stage of the Tour of Switzerland. The runner fell down a ravine and had to be airlifted to hospital after being treated on the spot. Magnus Sheffield (Ineos) also fell in the same place.

“He went down badly in relegation,” said Mäder’s Bahrain-Victorious team. He was treated at the accident scene long after the incident. Mäder apparently lay motionless in a stream after the fall and even had to be revived on the spot.

Those responsible for the Tour of Switzerland assured that the accident had occurred at kilometer 197 of the race “at high speed”. “The race doctor was at the crash site within two minutes,” explained Tour Director Oliver Senn. Mäder has now been taken to the hospital in Chur by Rega. As RSI writes, Mäder’s condition is currently stable.

Magnus Sheffield (21) of the Ineos Grenadiers team also fell at the same point of relegation. The American suffered less serious injuries.
