The Figueres City Council plans to move the soup kitchen that currently exists in the Estación neighborhood to the old regional slaughterhouse before the end of the year.

The government team hopes to be able to address the project at the government meeting in the coming weeks and for it to become a reality as soon as possible to put an end to the problems that the current building in Sant Vicenç de Paül square causes.

The action will cost around 300,000 euros and will be financed entirely with municipal funds.

For the moment, the dining room will be moved and it is not ruled out that other services related to emergency situations may be added later. The equipment will have, in addition to the dining room, showers and a laundry room.

The previous government team announced just a year ago the desire to locate a comprehensive care center for social emergencies in this building of just over 6,000 square meters. The desire was also to locate the offices of the Urban Police.

For years now, the current soup kitchen in the Estació neighborhood has caused neighborhood complaints and coexistence problems in the neighborhood. Precisely, this Thursday the government team met to explain their intentions.

The desire is for the transfer to be as soon as possible because the adaptation is relatively “simple.” The idea is that it will be before the end of the year. The project, which will be brought to the governing board soon, includes bathrooms and changing rooms, laundry and a dining room with capacity for between 80 and 90 people.

The action will cost around 300,000 euros and it is not ruled out that it may later host other services related to emergencies.

The mayor of Figueres, Jordi Masquef, explains that “the objective is to remove the space from this neighborhood in which it currently causes many problems for the neighbors.” “It will be in a much better location for all citizens,” adds Masquef.
