The electoral call announced yesterday by the Prime Minister took the PP leader by surprise, but only because of the date. He immediately got to work and three hours later he appeared before the media making a solemn declaration, with a flag of Spain and another of Europe. Behind the lectern from which he spoke, a new motto already appeared: “Spain preparedâ€.
The announcement caught the president of the PP in his office. He listened to it with his chief of staff and his communication director, just before the meeting of the steering committee began. He then prepared his statement, where the leader of the PP has already advanced where he intends for the pre-campaign and the upcoming electoral campaign to run. On Sunday, he said, “a new political cycle began, and from this very moment I call on everyone to finish it on July 23.”
The message of the president of the Popular Party continues the one he launched on Sunday, in the national direction: “The sanchismo is KO”, but as Feijóo said yesterday, “the sanchismo has not yet been repealed. Spain is summoned to do so in 54 daysâ€. At that time “he will have to clearly express what path he wants our nation to take during the next four years.” Feijóo requested the support of the citizens: “I ask from now on a clear, forceful and incontestable majority to start a new course.”
The leader of the PP wants to pretend that he is delighted with the call, “Better as soon as possible,” he said, even if it is in the middle of a holiday month like July. However, in the PP they wonder why on July 23, why now and not leave it for later. The only conclusion they come to is that it may have an internal party explanation. The call blocks the internal response of the barons and mayors who lost their positions last Sunday. They abound in this thesis knowing that Sánchez will not convene the federal committee until the 10th, when Feijóo will appear before his equivalent, tomorrow.
From the PP it is also remembered that Sánchez always tries to cover things that are not favorable to him with something more surprising. He calls elections so that the results of 28-M are not discussed.
The socialist leader is not interested in talking about defeat, “but I am,” said Feijóo, who recalled that the PP has won the municipal elections: it has won in 31 provinces and as many capitals, as well as in nine autonomous communities.
The PP leadership also suspects that one of the arguments being considered for the electoral call is that the call to the polls take place coinciding with the formation of the PP governments in alliance with Vox. But the popular response is clear. “The PSOE will also be agreeing with Bildu in Navarra” and in some cities, then the effect is the same, in the opposite direction. In addition, they emphasize, if they want to carry the campaign message around, why not in September, when the governments are already constituted. The PSOE, they think, could be easier to point them out.
Feijóo still does not want to talk about pacts in the recently conquered governments until the PP board of directors is held today, but yesterday he already announced, to questions from journalists, that the territories will be left to prepare their pact proposals. It will not be a statewide agreement.
In fact, Feijóo assured at the press conference, Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox, called him yesterday to congratulate him on the results, the only national leader who did so, and they did not talk about pacts.
The president of the PP will insist that it is he and only he who personifies this change of cycle: “May 28 has been the most powerful expression, and at the same time the cleanest, of the great desire for change that exists in our society”, a society to which he offers “a prepared government”, and for it to be effective, “I ask my country for an opportunity in the name of moderation, serenity and institutional respect”. Feijóo claims to interpret the feeling of the citizen when he affirms that “we must leave behind five years to forget” and, as if he were already in the campaign, he addressed the Spanish directly: “Today I ask for the confidence of the citizens to be the next president of the government of Spain”.
