The Mossos d’Esquadra have deployed a large device in Sant Andreu to evict El Jardí de la Julieta, a community garden that was promoted by the neighbors in Calle de Ignasi Iglesias in Barcelona.
A group of people gathered in front of the site to prevent the eviction from being carried out. Brimo units were removing the young people one by one, supported by a group of neighborhood residents, from this space occupied since 2018.
The assembly that manages El Jardí de la Julieta has taken most of the plants from the garden to the street so that the neighbors could take them home, as reported through their social networks.
The activists denounce that the owner of the site, the company New Real Estate Horizon, intends to destroy the garden for a series of luxury homes. “This is how chalets with swimming pools are built in a popular neighborhood. Gentrification is violence,” stated the Heura Negra de Vallcarca Libertarian Assembly.
This community garden was named El Jardí de la Julieta in memory of the last tenant who lived in one of the houses on the site. In recent years, the space has become the setting for concerts, workshops, movies, theater, poetry recitals, yoga sessions, among other activities.
