As explained by the president of the Navantia committee in Cádiz, José Antonio Bolaños, the protest began at the start of the work shift when the four workers fired by the Mecamansol company, dedicated to mechanical work in the shipyard, were stationed in the access turnstiles with a banner that read “Navantia’s mismanagement. Four families on the street. Subrogation now.”
The four workers, according to Bolaños, have been “used as pagans and hostages” in a legal dispute between Navantia and this subcontractor, which has led to the layoff of “four workers with many years of experience and advanced age” since yesterday, who are given no way out.”
The committee, like the rest of the Navantia staff and the subcontracted companies, have decided to show solidarity with the protest of the four colleagues and have chosen not to enter the factory and to concentrate in the parking lot of access to the Cadiz factory , pending an assembly in which the decision will be made on whether this impromptu strike is maintained or organized in another way.
The action has caused, right now, the activity in the Cádiz shipyard, where two ships are being repaired, to be completely stopped.
“The situation is under control because they were not ships that were going to leave right now, which would have caused a serious problem, but we do ask Navantia and Mecamensol to reinstate the workers and to use them ruthlessly,” claimed the committee chair.
