Welcome to the dialogue club. If for a long time we have criticized Junts for its strategy of confrontation with the central government, it is fair to congratulate them today on their decision to facilitate the presidency of Francina Armengol as president of Congress and pave the way for the investiture of Pedro Sánchez. Now that Carles Puigdemont will transform the criticism received in recent years into fervent praise from all those who support the negotiation path, it is also time to value the role of Esquerra, which adopted this pragmatic path to try to get out of the process loop. The “the worse, the better” is not going anywhere.
However, while yesterday’s vote was important, there is still a lot to negotiate to take the investiture of the socialist candidate for granted. Pedro Sánchez and any analyst who already gave as something closed the support of the Catalan independentistas for a future government of the PSOE and Sumar would be wrong. There is much to talk about, and today Puigdemont’s confidence with his interlocutors in Madrid is exactly “zero”. Committing to an amnesty law as the PSOE has done is something very important, but, as was abundantly clear yesterday, Puigdemont – who is the one who absolutely leads the Junts negotiation – wants “verifiable facts”. Until the stamped letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs came out requesting the modification of the regulation that regulates the use of languages ??in the EU, so that Catalan, Basque and Galician are included, Junts did not give its support to Armengol. For those who want to minimize the advance in the use of Catalan in Europe, it should be noted that it was one of the first demands that the Junts leader put on the table to start any negotiation with the PSOE. He already has it.
Armengol’s appointment is another nod to him. Not only because of the good relationship between the two, but also because the former Balearic president is one of the few socialist leaders who got involved in asking for a political solution for Puigdemont in the most difficult times for him. Nothing is done yet, and you have to be prudent, but the opportunity that is opening up is unique.
