Enhancing Storm Preparedness in Tampa for Severe Weather Events

news-24092024-041953

In preparation for the anticipated impact of Hurricane Helene on the Gulf Coast, the City of Tampa has announced the opening of sandbag distribution sites. Starting tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24, at 8 a.m., three locations will provide sandbags for senior residents and those requiring extra assistance. From noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, sandbags will be available to all residents, with operations resuming on Wednesday, September 25, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Please be aware that schedules may change based on weather conditions.

Aside from sandbag distribution, the city is implementing various storm preparations. Stormwater crews are actively clearing drainage systems to ensure they can handle the incoming rainfall. Solid Waste is also working to clear parts of the transfer station and Waste-to-Energy Plant to accommodate potential post-storm debris. Additionally, Parks & Recreation staff and other city employees are gearing up to possibly serve in hurricane shelters if needed.
