HAMDEN, Conn. — A Connecticut cemetery exhumed Wednesday a body to identify the victim of a nearly 50-year-old homicide. However, authorities found another victim, a news station reported.
WTNH News 8 was informed by East Haven Police that they would continue to investigate and try to find the victim’s grave at Hamden State Street Cemetery.
On Aug. 16, 1975, she was found dead wrapped in a blanket in a drainage ditch near an East Haven department store. Police refer to her as Jane Doe because authorities were unable to identify her identity.
Police believe she was buried at the State Street Cemetery in 1976. East Haven Police Capt. Joseph Murgo claims her grave was not marked, making it difficult to find.
Police told News 8 that the body of Wednesday’s exhumed victim was a male.
“The coordinates that we originally intended to use seem to be wrong. Murgo stated that there are more leads for investigation.
Murgo stated that several suspects were identified over the years. However, in order to make further progress, police must determine who the victim was.
