The technical services of the Calonge i Sant Antoni City Council, one of the Catalan municipalities most affected by last Saturday’s storm, estimate the damage caused by the onslaught of the waves at 450,000 euros.
The storm mainly affected the central part of the Sant Antoni de Calonge promenade and the beaches of Es Monestri and Torre Valentina, which were left without sand. It also caused damage to garden areas on the Torre Valentina promenade. Five palm trees that had been very weakened as a result of the other two storms that the municipality had suffered in the last month, ended up giving way.
The solution, according to the City Council, involves the construction of new breakwaters that should improve the protection of the first line of the Sea. A project, promoted by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which has already been approved but is pending tender.
The construction of two new dikes perpendicular to the beach that would lengthen those near the Aubi and Palamós stream would contribute to stabilizing the beaches of Sant Antoni, Es Monestri and Torre Valentina, which have been greatly affected in the last storm.
The objective is that storms do not wash away the sand from beaches that should have a minimum width of 50 meters throughout the year. One of the dams will be 150 meters long and will lengthen the current one located in front of the Aubí stream, built in 1987. The infrastructure will have another half-meter submerged section with a total length of 130 meters.
To stabilize Es Monestri beach, bordering the municipality of Palamós, a second 215-meter-long breakwater will be built. The first hundred meters will coincide with the current breakwater on Palamós beach, built in 1915, and the remaining 115 meters will be new.
The strong waves also hit the coast of LLoret de Mar. Between Thursday and Friday, it sank a section of about 100 meters of wall on Fenals beach and another 40 meters of pavement on the promenade, which has been greatly weakened by successive temporary.
