The film No Reservations (2007) is a remake of a turn-of-the-century German comedy-drama. The tape is so predictable and weak that neither the leading role of Catherine Zeta-Jones, nor the theme (haute cuisine), manage to lift it.

One of the few salvageable things in the film is a dialogue in which Zeta-Jones asks his love interest if he knows the three secrets of French gastronomy: “butter, butter and butter”, he replies.

I leave the quality of that scene and the veracity of the statement to the experts, but I can say that this is the secret of my mashed potatoes. In addition to good cooking (soft, but not undone), and just the right amount of milk and nutmeg.

My doctor may not approve of the amount of butter I put in my mashed potatoes, but in his defense I must say that the poor fellow hasn’t tried it either, so he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
