Artillery-Delivered Mine Systems Are Key In Ukrainian Defense
In the midst of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the use of mines has emerged as a critical technology in determining battlefield outcomes. While drones and electronic warfare have been prominent, the recent arrival of Western-provided ammunition, including 10,000 Remote Anti-Armor Mine Systems (RAAMS) in the American aid package, is set to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities at a crucial juncture. Each RAAMS round comprises nine anti-tank mines within a 155mm artillery shell, capable of dispersing over a designated area up to 17 kilometers away. As Ukraine strategically deploys RAAMS rounds, they have the advantage of experience, having previously utilized 40,000 rounds in the conflict. These systems prove particularly valuable during counterattacks, allowing for the establishment of obstacle belts to secure recaptured territories swiftly. With Russia intensifying efforts in Kharkiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk Oblasts, the strategic placement of RAAMS minefields becomes instrumental in disrupting enemy movements and safeguarding key positions.
In the face of Russian offensives threatening key cities like Kharkiv and Chasiv Yar, the timely support from the United States through RAAMS rounds underscores the importance of defensive measures for Ukraine.
