Officials said five officers were killed and four others were injured by bullet ricochet, or shrapnel. Although four officers are still in hospital, all of them are expected to survive.

After responding to a 911 call that night, police discovered that a woman had been killed. A police officer entered the house and was invited in. According to Phoenix Police Sergeant Andy Williams, the suspect ambushed the officer as he approached the front door and shot him multiple times.

Williams stated that a man came later to the door with a baby and then placed the infant on the ground. The man then left the house holding a baby and was taken into custody by police. The baby was then taken to the police station, where four officers were also shot.

Williams expressed gratitude for the “heroic” officers who came to the rescue of the child, even though another officer was ambushed and killed.

Williams stated that the man who brought out the baby is believed to have been a relative who lived in the house. He is cooperating and is not being considered a suspect.

Police identified the suspect to be Morris Jones, 36. Williams didn’t say whether Jones had ever been in contact with the department before.

The suspect was found dead inside by a SWAT team who responded to the call. The victim, who was the suspect’s ex-girlfriend, was critically injured.

Police stated that Jones and the woman had a child together, and that the baby girl on the scene was believed to be their child.
KPHO-TV’s CBS affiliate reported that the scene had become “much calmer” since the threat had been removed. She tweeted photos of holes in windows on the second floor.
