A law enforcement advocacy group reported Friday that there have been 19% more police officer shootings this year than in 2021.

The National Fraternal Order of Police’s findings are especially concerning given that 2021 data regarding wounded officers is the most recent.

The union reported that 178 officers had been killed in the line-of-duty in 2022, as compared with 150 in the same period in 2021. This is an 18.66% increase.

In 2021, 346 officers were killed in the line-of-duty. This is an increase of 312 in 2020 and 293 for 2019.

33 out of the 178 shots this year were fatal.

Reports show that 35 ambush-style assaults on law enforcement officers have been reported this year. This has resulted in 57 officers being shot and 12 being killed.

Two law enforcement officers from Kentucky were also killed in the new FOP data. Authorities said that the Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputies were trying in Allen, Kentucky to serve a search warrant when they came under attack.

National FOP President Patrick Yoes stated in a statement that “Make no mistake, we are experiencing a crisis with the level violence directed at law enforcement officers.” “It’s unlike anything I have seen in my 36 years as a law enforcement officer.”
