Police said Monday that surveillance video captured the frightening moments when a man tossing a woman onto the New York City subway tracks.
According to NYPD video, the attack took place on elevated tracks at Jackson Avenue Station in Bronx on Sunday at 4:40 PM.
The footage featured a man wearing a white tank, shorts, a backward baseball cap, and a backpack, reaching out to grab the woman before throwing her onto the tracks.
Police said that the 52-year old woman was in stable condition when she was taken to Lincoln Medical Center. As of Tuesday morning, there had been no arrest.
New York City’s subway system is a source of growing concern for residents. Mayor Eric Adams made public safety a central point of his winning campaign last year.
In recent months, there have been a string of violent or deadly incidents on New York City’s rail lines.
One transit advocate stated Tuesday that the string of high-profile subway accidents betrays overall safety in travel.
Danny Pearlstein, policy director and communications director at the Riders Alliance, a advocacy group for New York City’s bus and train commuters, stated that “Millions” use the subway daily and it is overwhelmingly safe.
“But, that being said, we are not at the point where everyone feels safe and welcome in the subway.”
New York City residents are concerned about subway safety. According to a Siena College poll released Tuesday, 85 percent said they would like more police officers to patrol the rails.
With a margin error of +/- 3.1 percent, pollsters conducted interviews with 1,000 New Yorkers by phone between May 22nd and Wednesday.
