A man died last night in the municipality of Gimenells i el Pla de la Font, in Lleida, when he fell into a bonfire lit in this town as part of the Sant Joan festival.
The Generalitat Firefighters have reported that they received notice of the event at 10:15 p.m. and that they have gone to the scene with two crews, which have quickly extinguished the bonfire so that the members of the Medical Emergency System (SEM) could attend the person, without being able to do anything to save his life.
Several patrols of the Mossos have also moved to the place, which have taken charge of the judicial procedures and the investigation of the causes of the event.
The Gimenells City Council is working to locate the family of the man who died yesterday when he jumped into the Sant Joan bonfire that was made near the Social Center of the town.
Mayor Dante Pérez regretted the event and explained that the council wants to speak with the victim’s relatives in Spain to manage the funeral. Pérez regretted that the municipality has experienced a “sad and shocking” festival, since at the stake there were “many parents with their children who witnessed a man throw himself into the flames.”
Some neighbors were also dismayed this Saturday morning by the death of the 30-year-old man of sub-Saharan origin
