A total of 38 people, who worked in different companies at the Madrid Barajas airport, have been arrested or investigated by the Civil Guard, within the framework of Operation Union, for stealing objects from checked luggage, the value of which exceeds 120,000 euros.
The stolen objects are of the most varied: from bags from luxury brands, such as Louis Vuitton, to mobile phones and tablets, watches, smartwatches, wireless headphones, cameras and jewelry, including drinks, food or tobacco and even a violin, a bible and high-end perfumes.
The Civil Guard highlights that these events, committed in a specific manner, could be carried out because all those involved are workers from companies that operate in the capital’s airport complex, which allowed them to “access and steal the contents of the luggage.” .
Some of the objects have already been returned to their owners. For example, a US Army non-commissioned officer has had a camera returned; a New York university student received her latest generation phone, and a CEO of a company recovered his very high-end mobile phone. Or a young musician has recovered his violin, with which he was going to participate in a concert in London.
There were also sentimental objects. A Nicaraguan religious man recovered her Bible full of photographs and personal notes, and an Italian woman has managed to get back the jewelry stolen from her at the capital’s airport. Thanks to the complaints, the Civil Guard has found the owners of some of her belongings.
Perishable products, such as sausage, ham, cheese, canned food and other foods, have been delivered to soup kitchens because their owners could not be found.
