SBCS, formerly known as South Bay Community Services, recently announced a significant milestone in their efforts to support the Chula Vista community. Thanks to a generous $100,000 grant from the James M. Cox Foundation, a new community engagement center is in the works at the corner of F Street and Fourth Avenue in Chula Vista.
The James M. Cox Foundation, the charitable arm of Cox Enterprises, provided this grant during a special topping off ceremony for the new center. Local leaders and residents gathered to celebrate the final beam being placed atop the building, marking a significant step towards the completion of this vital community resource.
Kathie Lembo, CEO of SBCS, expressed her gratitude for the foundation’s support, emphasizing the importance of raising funds for the new building. The center is expected to expand SBCS’s capacity to serve an additional 10,000 children, youth, and families each year, addressing critical needs such as domestic violence, food insecurity, and lack of housing or educational opportunities.
The new community engagement center will offer a wide range of services to individuals and families in crisis, all provided free of charge. From emergency assistance to mental health services, childcare, and civic engagement spaces, the center aims to be a welcoming and supportive environment for the community.
Established in 1971, SBCS has a long history of serving the San Diego County community, with a dedicated team of nearly 500 employees. This new center will further enhance their ability to provide essential support to those facing financial, emotional, and crisis situations.
With an anticipated opening in Spring 2025, the community engagement center will be a beacon of hope for residents in need. By offering a variety of services and resources, SBCS is committed to empowering children, youth, and families to thrive in the face of adversity.
