Pete, a dog who once wandered aimlessly through the streets of Bali, has found a new life away from his painful past. His story, now in a German home, began with a chance meeting with Desi. “I was driving and I saw a dog. He was horrible. Surprisingly, he was friendly. He immediately approached me,” Desi told the popular account The Dodo. This moment was the beginning of an incredible transformation for the dog.

Pete’s condition was alarming. He showed clear signs of malnutrition, hair loss and wounds on his face. It was then that Desi discovered that the dog had been abandoned by its owners after falling ill. “Suddenly a family appeared and it turned out that they were the owners. But when he got sick they left him out,” Desi revealed.

After four years living in a cage, Pete hardly knew human kindness, which was evident in his initial reaction to contact: “I started petting him and he put his head in my hands.” However, when he wanted to take him, he began to cry and scream shrillly.

His recovery was an emotional journey for both Pete and Desi. “We went to the vet and he was at the clinic for a long time. He was finally able to come out. He was very happy to see me,” Desi said. At his rescuer’s house, Pete began to experience affection, although his initial lack of knowledge of affection translated into a craving for constant attention. “He just wanted to be cuddled. Over time he became annoying,” explained Desi, whose other dogs received her new companion perfectly.

Pete’s physical transformation was amazing. He developed a shiny black coat and regained health. Finally, Desi made the decision to give him up for adoption and found him a home in Germany with Simone. “She was nervous. But it was amazing to see it for the first time,” Simone said.

Despite initial difficulties, such as adapting to other animals and his problem with personal space, Pete has managed to integrate into his new home. “I think he is grateful for the life he has now,” said his new owner.
