The arrested person, Eric Charaudeau, who had a French identity card, was arrested after the Catalan police, thanks to the alert system implemented in hotels, received notice that the fugitive was preparing to spend the night in a hotel. of la Jonquera.

Charaudeau was sentenced to life imprisonment along with a companion for having killed two people in a car accident when they were fleeing the police after robbing a bank. The events occurred in June 1999 in the municipality of Winter Garden, in the state of Florida. At the time, the accused was barely 17 years old and his accomplice was 16. As a result of the accident, Charaudeau was injured and admitted to a hospital, but an error between the police, the juvenile justice system and the medical center caused the accused to escape. The doctors discharged him without any agent guarding the room, so the accused managed to escape.

An Orange County (Florida) court sentenced him in absentia to a life sentence for first-degree murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of weapons. United States authorities had been searching for him since then. After the arrest of the Mossos d’Esquadra, the fugitive was handed over to the National Court, which has however delegated the case to a court in Figueres to make the extradition to the United States effective.
