The Civil Guard and SEPRONA have seized a specimen of the Harris Eagle (Parabuteo Unicinctus) in a home in the Rioja town of Hormilleja. The bird lacked legal documentation under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The owner of the eagle, a 47-year-old man, a resident of Hormilleja, has been investigated as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against wildlife. Therefore, the bird was intervened, recovered and subsequently transferred to the Wildlife Recovery Center of La Rioja, La Fombera, to continue caring for it.

Now, in addition, the owner has been filed with the corresponding complaint for an administrative violation of the Smuggling Law, which carries a minimum penalty of a fine of 1,000 euros.
The Civil Guard recalls that, with respect to crimes against wildlife, “you will be punished with a prison sentence of six months to two years or a fine of eight to twenty-four months and the disqualification of the right to hunt or fish for a period of two to four years.” “anyone who hunts, fishes, acquires, possesses or destroys protected species of wildlife.”
The proceedings in this case have been made available to the judicial authority. The administrative complaint is available to the Delegation of Customs and Special Taxes of La Rioja.
