Gerardo Miranda, 78, died this Thursday after tripping and stabbing himself with a scythe he was carrying in his shoulder while he was on his way to mow a family meadow in the early afternoon in San Justo, in Villaviciosa, Asturias.
It was his nephew, who was behind him with the tractor, who found him and notified the emergency services, although nothing could be done for him, according to the Asturian newspaper La Nueva España.
The news of the event spread among the residents of the area throughout this Thursday, even reaching neighboring parishes where the victim had family. “When they told me it was a complete surprise,” explains Juan Luis Fernández, president of the neighborhood association, who conveyed the town’s regret for the fatal accident.
This is the first death of the year related to field work in Villaviciosa. The previous death related to field work occurred on November 4, when a 62-year-old rancher from Barredos died after his tractor overturned and suffered a severe blow to the head.
