Actor José Coronado has regretted the controversy caused by his words on the red carpet of the Feroz Awards about the delay in reporting sexual assaults and has assured that his intention was to “encourage reporting.”
“I regret my words, my intention was to encourage reporting, of course I am not the one to determine the times for victims to report attacks,” Coronado stated in a publication on his Instagram profile.
Last Friday, after the public complaints of three women against the director Carlos Vermut for sexual violence, published by the newspaper El País, Coronado was asked about the issue when walking the red carpet of the Feroz Awards presented by film informants.
“You have to report and you can’t wait years, you have to do it immediately, today women have mechanisms to feel defended. You have to denounce every scoundrel who does atrocious things,” said the actor, who was attending the gala held at the Palace from Vistalegre de Madrid as nominated for best supporting role for his work in ‘Cerrar los ojos’, by Víctor Erice.
Coronado pointed out that the fear that some women alleged when reporting was no longer understood and added: “You are protected, I understand the fear that you could have before, but today you are protected, you no longer have to be afraid.”
These words were criticized on social networks because they were understood as a criticism of women who take time to report their attackers and which has now led Coronado to publicly apologize.
“From here I reiterate my firmest support for all those who suffer from it and my absolute condemnation of the aggressor,” concludes the actor’s brief message.
