The former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont will run for reelection as president of the Consell de la República in the elections for the presidency of the entity that will be held from February 5 to 14.
Puigdemont will have to compete with Jordi Castellà, lawyer and primary councilor in Canet de Mar (Barcelona) and with journalist Lluís Felipe Lozano, the Council of the Republic has informed in a statement.
The election of the presidency will be carried out by direct vote of the members of the Council, as stipulated by the recent reform of the organization promoted by Puigdemont and which generated controversy among the bases, who accused the leadership of having entered into an “authoritarian drift.” .
The elections come at a time when Puigdemont has gained political prominence again as a result of the negotiations for the investiture of Pedro Sánchez, which the bases of the Council opted to “block”.
Once the candidacies have been ratified, the electoral campaign will begin on February 5, which will end on the 14th. One day later, voting will open, which will end on the 19th at 9:00 am.
The final proclamation of the new president will take place on February 24, once the Electoral Commission has resolved any possible claims that may arise once the electoral period ends.
