El Prat de Llobregat has reached 90% performance efficiency in its drinking water supply network. There are only 10% leaks. The figure represents a “record in the municipality and in Catalonia, where the average is 78.5%,” the town’s City Council said this Wednesday in a press release.

These data come in a context of drought emergency in Catalonia. Leakages in the network are precisely one of the points of improvement to combat the lack of water. “The figure reflects the good functioning of the municipality’s supply facilities and the existence of an almost anecdotal number of leaks,” the City Council assessed.

“This performance is possible due to two fundamental factors: the continuous monitoring of the supply network and the planning and execution of maintenance of the oldest pipes,” argued the El Prat City Council.

In this sense, during the years 2022 and 2023, a total of 1.3 million euros were invested in fifteen works to replace, renovate and expand the pipes. Most of them, in the urban center of the town of Baix Llobregat. The reforms of different streets were used to improve the water system.

“It’s a historical figure for us”, said the manager of Aigües del Prat, the municipal company that manages the service, Aure Garcia, valuing how the firm has been improving year after year. “They say that the drought is fought in good times”, added the mayor, Lluís Mijoler, during the annual assembly of the Association of Municipalities for Public Water, a forum that was held this Wednesday in El Prat.

According to data from the City Council, during 2023 the citizens of El Prat have maintained their usual water consumption, which is around 95 liters per person per day. The City Council has started a campaign urging residents to reduce consumption to 90 liters per person per day.
