Xavi Hernández is considering reversing his decision, in principle irrevocable, to leave the Barça bench on June 30, one season before the end of his contract. The Terrassa coach is open to meeting with president Joan Laporta and with Deco, technical secretary, to discuss his possible continuity.
As La Vanguardia has learned, Xavi will agree to meet with the board at the end of this week to discuss the near future of the bench.
Xavi had announced on January 27, in the press conference after the defeat against Villarreal (3-5), that he would leave Barça on June 30 despite the fact that he had a contract until June 2025. However, in In the last press conferences, the Terrassa coach had shown obvious signs of being able to reconsider his decision: the explicit displays of support from the heavyweights in the locker room, the words of Deco and Laporta himself wanting his continuity, and the feeling of injustice and of unfinished work came together in the coach’s mind.
However, Xavi’s continuity would not be with a blank check to Laporta. The coach wants to know the board’s intentions for next season and propose some conditions, as La Vanguardia already published: having a competitive squad to truly aspire to all the titles, differential signings that mean a notable improvement of the current squad, among them, a center midfielder, a full-back and a forward who makes a difference, and – a far from trivial aspect – introduce changes in the daily functioning of the team and its immediate surroundings of the club. Xavi wants to protect and isolate his team from some elements that frequent the surroundings of the locker room.
At the top of the club they are open to talks with Enrique, Arteta or Klopp are unattainable, and the option of Rafa Márquez, coach of Barça Atlètic, is very risky and immature, and does not enjoy popular acceptance among Barcelona fans.
