The grilled ham and cheese sandwich, mixed sandwich, also known as bikini in Catalonia, is one of the most popular and easiest to prepare. However, as silly as it may seem, there are many tricks hidden behind this basic recipe. For example, making the cheese perfectly melted without burning the bread or making the bread crispy without dripping with grease or being flattened like a cigarette paper.
Paying a little attention to the preparation technique, using quality ingredients and doing it with love, if you apply these keys, they will surely improve your mixed sandwiches at home.
There are four ingredients that are normally used to make a mixed sandwich: sliced ??bread, butter, cooked ham or York ham and cheese. It is important to choose quality products and not use cheap packaged cold cuts because the result will be very different.
Where to make the sandwich? We can use an electric sandwich maker, a griddle or a frying pan. If we use the first option, there are many that give good results, although it is recommended to use it with the thermostat at minimum so that before the bread is toasted too much, the cheese has had time to melt inside.
If, on the other hand, we choose to use a griddle, a frying pan or a grooved pan, we must cook the sandwich very slowly. We can cover the pan while the bottom side browns. Remember not to crush it with the spatula or to turn it over and over.
The most important thing is to always use the lowest temperature since with this we can toast the bread while the cheese melts.
If we use a very high heat, our sandwiches will be done sooner, but we will see that they will be more burned on the inside and less cooked on the inside.
