Toni Kroos, the German player for Real Madrid, gave a press conference in advance of the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 in which his team faces Leipzig in Germany. The player showed the personality that characterizes him and did not want to clear up the unknowns surrounding his future as to whether he will renew as Madrid wants (his contract ends on June 30) or if he will return to the German team to play in the Euro Cup. “I will make the decision when I feel ready or it is clear to me. It may be before the end of the season,” he commented. “Now this doesn’t worry me one bit because it doesn’t affect my performance.”
What Toni Kroos did make clear is that he wants to retire at the highest level: “I started very young at Bayern, at 17 years old, in a club that also has a lot of pressure. I always thought I would retire at 32 years old. I’m 34 and still going. What is certain is that I am not going to return to Bayern, although I love that they want me there.”
The German separated his future from that of Luka Modric, who at 38 years old finds it very difficult to continue for another year: “We are two different people. About the future we think a little differently. It’s his decision, or the club’s, I don’t know, I’m talking about my case.”
And he continued: “I have to make many decisions and I haven’t made any yet. What to do? It will depend on how I feel, on my personal plans, which I have… because I want to finish my career at the highest possible level. A month ago year we had the same discussion and I’m still quite happy with that decision. We’ll see. Now the year is going so well that it gives me a little more time to make the decision and I want it to be the right one. The selection? I’m thinking about it, there’s the Possibility, yes, but I don’t know yet…”
Kroos spoke about the key to his performance: “Having the same desire to win things as 10 years ago. If not, you don’t arrive. I take good care of my body so I can be playing every three days without anything happening. Things are working. “My head surprises me more than my body.”
The German also spoke about the whistles he received in Arabia in the two matches of the Esaña Super Cup: “It didn’t surprise me. For me it was confirmation that what he had said was the right thing.” “He was always against playing in that country because of the lack of human rights.”
Kroos sees that Real Madrid can win this Champions League: “I don’t know if we are favorites, but we have the conditions to win this title, we have shown it. But sometimes a bad day throws you out. The Champions League motivates us because we always get the best games against the best rivals.”
