The Diocese of Jaén has reported that, throughout this Tuesday, an attempted telephone scam has been made known to numerous religious communities in the province of Jaén, in which an attempt was made to impersonate the bishop of Jaén, Sebastián Chico. This is a scam that has been detected by the communities themselves.
The events, as reported by the bishopric in a statement, have already been reported, and all the information has been made available to the authorities. For this reason, they have called for any scam attempt to be reported to the competent authority.
Likewise, extreme precautions are requested in the face of “the proliferation of scam attempts through different means.” For all these reasons, the Diocese of Jaén recommends that, if there is any type of doubt about the authenticity of a request, whether by telephone, email or on social networks, communication be interrupted and the official channels and channels should be used. the Diocese to verify said request.
At the same time, it is warned that unknown numbers or those who ask to act with excessive urgency should be distrusted.
