Rice is a very popular food in gastronomy at a national and international level and it is not surprising, thanks to its great versatility in the kitchen. You can make preparations as simple –although delicious– as Cuban-style rice; or more elaborate recipes such as a risotto or an authentic Valencian paella. It is also an excellent garnish and even serves for desserts, the tasty rice pudding.
Of course, something similar happens with rice, it is difficult to get the quantity right. We often find leftover rice that we try to use for other preparations. But what you probably didn’t know is that you can transform your leftover rice into dough to make gyozas.
This is a very simple trick that has gone viral on social networks, perfect for wasteful cooking, which seeks to combat food waste. Although on TikTok we find a wide variety of videos teaching this procedure, we refer to one of the ones that have garnered the most ‘likes’.
Under the username @ballehurns, Balle has 2.5 million followers on TikTok, where he shares recipes and cooking tricks. One of them, showing how to make gyoza dough using leftover rice. The video in question has almost 95 thousand likes.
Now, in order to use your leftover rice, it must only be cooked in water. If you have added any other food, sauce or spice, it will not work for the gyozas.
Add the leftover rice to a blender or grinder. Blend the rice until it acquires the consistency of a paste, as you can see in the video. Next, add half a cup of flour, although the amount of flour will depend on the amount of rice.
What you should do is mix the flour with the rice paste until you have a uniform and consistent dough. “You’ll know it’s ready when it’s soft and smooth,” explains Balle.
Next, sprinkle flour on a surface and flatten the dough, with the help of your hands or a rolling pin. When it is thin, cut out portions with a mold or a glass. Then, fill these portions of dough with the filling you like the most and close the gyozas, joining the edges well so that they do not open.
To cook the gyozas, boil them in boiling water for about 5 minutes. Do not add too much water, the idea is not to cook them completely covered, but rather to cook them with the heat. A touch of water in the pan will be enough.
Once the water has evaporated, add a tablespoon of oil to the pan and toast the gyozas, in order to give them that characteristic crunchy touch. And that’s it, you can now consume them accompanied by the sauce of your choice.
