Netflix is ??accused of producing series like donuts, often regardless of their quality and asking only that they be entertaining. But, from time to time, a proposal also arrives with a desire for prestige, which aims for awards and aims to seduce lovers of good television fiction. Ripley, the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s literary character, falls into this category, as the trailer shows.

Andrew Scott, whom many still recognize as the priest from Fleabag and who is currently in movie theaters with All of Us Strangers, is Tom Ripley, a conman in New York in the 1960s who accepts an unusual job: “he is hired by a millionaire to go to Italy and convince his wandering son to return home.” This decision, rather than leading you on the right path, will do the opposite.

Those who remember the adaptation of Mr Ripley’s Talent that Anthony Minghella released in 1999 with Matt Damon as the shady man of the title, will be able to recognize the characters: Dakota Fanning (The Alienist) is Marge, the role played by Gwyneth Paltrow in the film , Johnny Flynn (The Lovers) is Dickie, the man immortalized by an Oscar-nominated Jude Law, and also features John Malkovich.

And who is behind this new version of Ripley? A key name in Hollywood, Steven Zaillan, who has an Oscar for the screenplay of Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List and who has also written films by Martin Scorsese such as Gangs of New York and The Irishman, by Ridley Scott such as American Gangster and Exodus : Gods and Kings, or the series The Night of, for which he won the Emmy as both a writer, director and producer.

Ripley, which will have eight episodes, can be seen on Netflix starting April 4.
