Among all the issues that we value when going to a bar or restaurant, one stands out: the price per person. Consumers look closely at what a starter, main dish, drink or dessert costs. And they do not ignore any excessive charges: they do not return, they ask for explanations from those responsible for the establishment or they report the case on social networks.

That’s what one customer did when he discovered he’d been charged for six chopsticks. In total, 2.40 euros, according to the ticket published on X (formerly Twitter) by Soy Camarero, which is dedicated to denouncing undignified situations in the hospitality sector.

As can be read on the receipt, these six toothpicks are more expensive than two pieces of bread (1 euro in total). It is even more expensive than a lemon Fanta, which costs 2 euros.

The decision to charge for toothpicks has not ceased to generate controversy on social networks. “They sent that ticket simply to be funny since the toothpicks are bread picks and they know they are not toothpicks. It is creating controversy for the sake of creating or out of boredom. In many places, even if you don’t ask for it, they charge you for the bread,” says one.

However, Soy Camarero denies that they are bread sticks: “This happened in Malaga and they are not the bread sticks that you mentioned, I just asked because I also doubted them.”

Aside from the debate, some cannot hide their surprise when they see the detail of the ticket. “Regardless of whether it is one thing or another: they count and charge per unit… And if they are breadsticks… do they count them per unit? Do they put six?” they point out.
