The process has had a high cost for Catalonia. For ten years the nationalist dream has left the country without management or long-term vision. After the sentence of the Statute there were reasons for anger. The busy Catalan, Enric Juliana said, had his reasons. The fact of airing a Statute that was born precisely from the will to formulate a proposal for Spain was a terrible blow. But taking advantage of that debacle to accuse the Spanish State of all the evils and accelerate an independence process that its promoters knew would never come to fruition was a disaster. The problem was not Spain, it was a part of Spain, of the elites.

The opposition to the Statute was born in the same centers of power that are now encouraging the flogging of Pedro Sánchez’s coalition Government. Those who pushed Operation Catalunya to persecute pro-independence leaders are the same ones who have attacked and defamed Pedro Sánchez and his family. The same ones who previously harassed Pablo Iglesias and Mónica Oltra.

There are two Spains. One is progressive, supported by a multi-national majority, open to the world, admired in Europe. And the other is black Spain, the one that destroyed the Statute, the one that accuses the pro-independence parties of being terrorists and the one that devised and promoted the campaign of systematic harassment of the progressive Government. It is a sinister Spain that has pawns in the judicial, political and media systems of Madrid. I am not referring to the voters, of course, but to the elite who yearn to return to the darkest past.

I have never been pro-independence because the problem is not Spain. The problem is the conglomeration of mud that conspires from Madrid to cower those who move Spain forward, with the acquiescence of the PP. They despise women, deny climate change, oppose the linguistic and cultural diversity of Spain, drink from the most stale nationalism. So, the answer will never be independence, just as it is not telling Sánchez to leave the house in tears as Puigdemont did, in the purest Ayuso style. The answer is to defend our democracy and that together we put an end to these mafia and disinformation practices that threaten our country.
