Víctor Font, candidate for the presidency of Barça in the last elections, has asked the current president, Joan Laporta, to take “a step aside” if he is not able to redirect the “perception of misgovernance” that according to the businessman is eroding “ “both the economic, social and institutional spheres” of the Blaugrana club.
Barely a week after ensuring that the management of the entity is a “mess” and not ruling out a motion of censure if “red lines” are crossed, Font has gone further with a letter addressed to Laporta where he shows his “deep concern.” ” because of the situation at Barça, even more so after the latest information that appeared in the media that calls the board into question.
Font denounces “the breach of the club’s code of ethics with the payment of expenses of the personal guarantees of the directors by a supplier”, an information published by El Periódico, and also points out Deco in relation to “the news surrounding possible conflicts of interest of the sports director and his work as a player representative. Finally, he also emphasizes “the terrible management of Xavi Hernández’s replacement (or not) as coach.”
The businessman also remembers that “in the coming weeks we must close the 23-24 season and the situation of the accounts continues to be one of operating losses”, especially because the club has not yet found “a real investor to validate the until now fictitious sale of 49% of Barça Studios and that it is willing to enter at a valuation of €400m, which is an unrealistic value, well above what the market is willing to pay.
For these reasons, Font, “as a representative of the thousands of members” who gave him their “trust in the last elections”, with a total of 16,679 votes, addresses the president and the board of directors so that the club “does an exercise in transparency in all the issues that are very negatively affecting its image and reputation, as promised at the beginning of the mandate.”
He also requests that, given the delicate situation of Barça, the board avoids “carrying out any dubious operation that involves a flight forward (Barça Studios), a new sale of assets (strategic players) and/or mortgaging more future income (new agreement with Nike), with the sole objective of balancing the accounts and covering up the economic reality that has not been corrected.”
Font concludes that “the club must be rebuilt from the foundations” due to a “critical situation” that requires “maximum professionalism and experience to reverse it.” “If we take advantage of all the potential we have, we will be able to compete again against the best,” says the leader of the Sí al futur platform, who extends Laporta’s hand by offering him the “shock plan” with which he ran in the last elections, as already did at the beginning of the current mandate.
“But yes, given the complexity of the moment and as it seems due to the poor results achieved since 2021, he does not have the heart to move Barça forward, we ask him to take a step aside. We represent a new generation of culés and we are ready, prepared to transform the club, modernize it and return it once and for all to the position it deserves,” Font concludes his letter to the president.
