Garbiñe Muguruza announced a few days ago her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 30. ”I feel that the time has come to retire and open a new chapter in my life or as athletes say ”a new era,”” she confessed at the press conference where she announced her goodbye.
This Friday, May 3, the former tennis player visited the Espejo Público set to talk about her professional career, her future plans and about some of the controversies that have surrounded the world of sports in recent months. ”Now I want a home, to start a family, normal things (…) I’m getting married this year,” she confessed.
Regarding the barrage of criticism she has received in recent months for her physique, Garbiñe Muguruza assured live on the Antena 3 program that she did not care about the criticism and that she “looked very good.” ”I look fantastic, it is clear that I will never be like when I played in the Olympics or the finals when I trained 9 hours a day… that is unsustainable,” she said.
The athlete also spoke about equal pay between men and women in tennis, an issue that Rafa Nadal already spoke about and that has generated much debate in recent months. ”I think that we are very lucky because tennis is one of the most egalitarian sports. It is clear that the boys generate more, more people go to see it, more sponsors move… So, I understand that they think that there must be a small difference if they generate more,’ she assured.
”I am more in favor of supporting other sports that do not have visibility. Tennis is like the princess of sport, because there is a sponsor, television, attention, we are popular, but gymnastics, swimming, athletics… We have to improve a lot,” the former tennis player explained. ”It’s great that you say it, too, how generous of you, Garbiñe,” the presenter, Susanna Griso, told her.
Finally, the former tennis player was not sure what she was going to do in the future, but she assured that she was open to ideas. ”Tennis is something that I have been very good at, but now I want to discover what other things I can be good at,” she stated.
