The metropolitan area of ??Barcelona is the granary of votes that supports the historic victory of the Catalan socialists both in votes and in deputies. The PSC exceeds 40% of the ballots in the large cities around the Catalan capital and is once again the hegemonic party in the red belt.
The socialists have returned to play at home and have made a demonstration of power like those exhibited for several decades, until Ciudadanos took their place at the moment of maximum polarization around independence. In 2021, the PSC has already regained its traditional dominance and in this electoral event those from Illa have consolidated the trend, reaching a majority with voting percentages of a forcefulness that has not been seen for 25 years in the metropolitan region. The orange party, on the other hand, has become completely irrelevant.
The failure of the Republicans throughout Catalonia is also heard in the province of Barcelona and they are losing votes in practically all municipalities. Junts now occupies second position in regions such as Vallès Occidental and Oriental, as well as in Maresme and Garraf, and is also the second most voted party in the majority of regional capitals and medium-sized cities. In Sant Cugat del Vallès, they even manage to be the most voted force, a milestone that they also reach in small metropolitan towns such as Torrelles, Begues, La Palma de Cervelló and Tiana, the only blue spots next to Sant Cugat on a metropolitan map dominated by red. In all these cases, furthermore, the socialists are the second most voted party and improve the results in a very relevant way.
Puigdemont’s training does prevail in central Catalonia and in the most rural areas far from the metropolitan environment, as is usual. Only in Baix Llobregat do the Republicans resist and maintain second place, ahead of Junts, which prevails in Osona, Bages and Berguedà. In general terms, the loss of some is absorbed by the others and the pro-independence sum remains stable compared to the last electoral date in the province of Barcelona.
The other left-wing formation with a historically relevant role at the polls in the metropolitan area has been the common ones with the different acronyms used over time. In this case, like Comuns Sumar, they have barely maintained good results in fiefdoms like El Prat de Llobregat. In other places where they used to have a certain presence and where not so many years ago they were ahead of the socialists, this time they have been surpassed by the PP and Vox, in addition to the socialists and the independentists.
The Popular Party, for its part, has improved its results significantly, going from being a practically irrelevant force in the metropolitan municipalities during the last decade to collecting a good number of votes and becoming the second party, only behind the Socialists. in cities like l’Hospitalet and Cornellà. Vox remains more or less as it was and Aliança Catalana has registered lower voting levels in the metropolitan area than in Catalonia as a whole.
