On November 13, 1992, one of the darkest crimes remembered in the history of Spain occurred. It was during the night of that day when Desirée Hernández, Miriam García and Antonia ‘Tonyi’ Gómez were kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered after leaving their home in Alcàsser to go to a nightclub in Picassent. Two girls, 14 years old and one 15 years old, respectively, who took the authorities two months to find.
Two beekeepers ended up finding the lifeless bodies of the teenagers on January 27, 1993 in the area of ??La Romana, near the Tous reservoir. The police investigation would end up finding two culprits: Miquel Ricart, who declared that he had been a “scapegoat” for the triple crime; and Antonio Anglés Martins, considered the material author of the deaths. Track of him was lost in Dublin that same year, leaving many questions.
After evading a strong raid by the National Police in Vilamarxant and hijacking a car at gunpoint in the Cuenca town of Minglanilla, Anglés was not seen again until March in Lisbon, where one of the several theories about his whereabouts suggests that he got on as a stowaway on the City of Plymouth ship, bound for the Irish capital. That is where he could have died, as his brother was trying to prove.
Joaquín Mauricio Martins filed an application in the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 5 of Catarroja to declare his brother Antonio dead, in order to facilitate the procedures for an inheritance. However, the Attorney for the Administration of Justice has denied his request, alleging that the fugitive is in “an active investigation in another court regarding the person about whom the statement is requested.”
Another of the reasons given by the person responsible is that “the family’s request is not duly justified because it does not specify the reasons for the request,” as sources from the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community confirmed to the ABC newspaper on Monday. This means that the investigation into Martins’ whereabouts remains active through the Investigative Court Number 6 of Alzira, before he is considered unchargeable on December 14, 2029.
It will be on that date when Antonio Anglés Martins will be free of any responsibility for the crime of the Alcàsser girls as the case prescribes. Meanwhile, the Dublin track continues to attract interest from a multitude of sources. The Netflix docuseries English: Escape Story uncovered an unidentified blood sample from a man drowned in Dublin in 1993, as well as two bodies buried in Glasnevin and found on the coast that would be compatible with the fugitive.
