James Van Der Beek, known for his roles in shows like “Dawson’s Creek” and “Varsity Blues,” recently shared some personal news. He revealed that he has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the 47-year-old actor mentioned that he has been dealing with this diagnosis privately while receiving support from his family. Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, have six children together.
Colorectal cancer, also known as colon or rectal cancer depending on where it originates, develops in the tissues of the colon or rectum. The American Cancer Society explains that most colorectal cancers start as benign growths called polyps on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. While most polyps are noncancerous, the type of polyp can affect the likelihood of it becoming cancerous.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. If left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body. However, advancements in screening tests, early treatment, and new therapies have led to a decrease in colorectal cancer-related deaths, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Factors that can increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer include age, personal or family history of the disease, inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease, lack of physical activity, poor diet, obesity, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend regular screening tests for individuals between the ages of 45 and 75 to detect colorectal cancer early.
Treatment options for colorectal cancer may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. While Van Der Beek did not provide specific details about his diagnosis, he expressed optimism about his prognosis and stated that he is feeling good.
Despite his health situation, Van Der Beek is not planning to take a hiatus from acting. He is scheduled to appear in a Tubi original film called “Sidelined: The QB and Me” later this month. Additionally, in December, he will participate in “The Real Full Monty,” a special program featuring male celebrities stripping down to raise awareness about prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer testing and research.
Van Der Beek has had a successful acting career spanning over three decades, with credits dating back to the 1990s. While he is best known for his roles in “Dawson’s Creek” and other popular shows, he has continued to work on various projects, including recent appearances on “Walker” and voicing a character on the children’s show “Vampirina.”
