I have a unique story to share with you today. My husband and I got engaged after just a week of knowing each other. It’s not that a woman’s marital status defines her, but it’s an interesting tale. You see, my husband is Ben Sachs, a former film critic for the Reader, and we now coedit Cine-File together.
This past weekend, we celebrated our wedding anniversary by watching three movies: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Fitzcarraldo (1982), and Army of Shadows (1969). While Colonel Blimp relates to marriage due to its exploration of love and relationships, it was Fitzcarraldo that struck a chord with me. The idea of hauling a boat over a mountain in the film symbolizes the challenges and obstacles couples face in marriage. Love is the driving force that makes it all worthwhile.
On another note, I also enjoyed watching Beetlejuice and a double feature at Facets, which involved haunted dresses wreaking havoc on their wearers. It was a fun way to kick off the spooky season. And speaking of spooky, I’m looking forward to the Music Box of Horrors marathon this weekend.
