Junior Achievement of South Florida is celebrating its 65th year by expanding its impact on students’ lives. The organization has built a simulated town to promote workforce education and prepare young people for their future careers. Founded in 1919, Junior Achievement of South Florida is committed to empowering students with the skills they need to succeed in the real world.
The simulated town features several new storefronts, including a replica of WSVN’s news studio. This addition aims to inspire students who are interested in pursuing careers in journalism and new media. Craig Stevens, WSVN anchor, expressed his excitement about the opportunity for students to explore different roles in the news industry. Paul Magnes, Co-President of WSVN-TV, highlighted the variety of jobs available in the newsroom and encouraged students to consider a career in media.
Every 5th-grade student in Broward County visits BizTown to gain hands-on experience in real-world careers and situations. They learn valuable lessons such as job applications, money management, and customer service. Additionally, students can explore other career paths, such as teaching at a NSU simulation or working in law enforcement at the mini Broward Sheriff’s Office.
In 8th grade, students have the opportunity to visit JA Finance Park, where they learn about different career pathways and essential work skills. They also participate in the JA Fellows program, where they start real businesses and gain practical experience in entrepreneurship. The simulated town features 18 storefronts sponsored by local businesses, providing students with a realistic and immersive learning environment.
Laurie Sallarulo, President and CEO of Junior Achievement of South Florida, emphasized the importance of hands-on learning experiences for students. By participating in the simulated city, students can explore their interests, develop essential skills, and gain a better understanding of how they can contribute to their community. The support of local businesses and organizations, such as the Ansin Foundation, has been instrumental in making these educational initiatives possible.
