The Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego is hosting the 22nd annual Bootcamp Challenge on Saturday, Oct. 19, giving community members the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Marine. The three-mile obstacle course includes tunnel crawls, hurdles, trenches, and other challenging events that provide a glimpse into the rigorous training that recruits undergo.
According to Staff Sgt. Karlo Esquivel, one of the drill instructors at the Bootcamp Challenge, the real challenge comes not from the obstacles themselves, but from the 60 motivating drill instructors who will be yelling at participants throughout the course. While recruits typically face 20 drill instructors, it only takes one to push you to your limits. Bruno the Marine Mascot will also be present at the finish line to cheer participants on.
Esquivel encourages the entire community to participate in the event, as it provides a unique opportunity to interact with drill instructors and gain a firsthand understanding of the Marine Corps training regimen. This experience can help foster a greater appreciation for the dedication and resilience of the men and women who serve in uniform.
For those who prefer not to participate in the obstacle course, MCRD is offering new family-friendly activities, including interactive games, camouflage painting, music, and more. These activities are free for everyone to enjoy and provide an opportunity for families to engage with the Marine Corps community.
