A house fire in Lemon Grove on Saturday night left a family of six and their 10 dogs displaced. The incident took place in the area of El Prado Avenue and Beryl Street. Smoke was visible as firefighters arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m., and Heartland Fire requested the public to avoid the area until at least 10 p.m. that night.

The family, consisting of three adults, three children, and their 10 dogs, was safely evacuated from the burning home. Unfortunately, one person had to be taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. During the chaos, the family realized that not all of their dogs were accounted for, leading to animal control joining the search efforts.

In addition to Heartland Fire, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, San Miguel Fire, and SDG&E all provided assistance at the scene. The Red Cross was also called upon to provide support to the displaced family during this difficult time.

House fires can be devastating, resulting in property damage, injuries, and displacement. It is essential to take precautions to prevent such incidents from occurring. Here are some tips to help you support victims of house fires and prevent future incidents:

1. Install Smoke Alarms: Make sure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms on every level and inside each bedroom. Test the alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed.

2. Create an Escape Plan: Develop a fire escape plan with your family, including a designated meeting spot outside. Practice the plan regularly so that everyone knows what to do in case of a fire.

3. Keep Flammable Items Secure: Store flammable materials like cleaning supplies, gasoline, and matches in a safe place away from heat sources.

4. Properly Maintain Appliances: Regularly inspect and maintain appliances to prevent electrical fires. Avoid overloading outlets and use appliances according to manufacturer guidelines.

5. Check Heating Sources: Have your heating system inspected annually to ensure it is functioning correctly. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials.
