Fellow officers and the family of fallen officer David Lee gathered for an emotional balloon release in his honor just before his final farewell Friday evening at the North Patrol in St. Louis. The evening began with prayer and emotional remarks from David’s family and friends. Dozens of red balloons, his favorite color, floated into the sky, symbolizing the deep love and respect felt by all those whose lives he had touched.

David’s wife, Tonya Lee, shared her sentiments, saying she had visited his body and he looked amazing. She told him they were sending red balloons up to him as a way to honor him. The growing memorial around his patrol car, adorned with flowers, mementos, and personal items, paints a picture of a community in mourning.

Major Joe Morici of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department described David as the strong silent type, quiet around the office but dedicated to his job. Chief Robert Tracy expressed that David would have wanted the service to continue, highlighting the significant loss felt by the department.

Officer Lee tragically lost his life on September 22 while working a crash site on Interstate 70, struck by a drunk driver, 24-year-old Ramon Chavez-Rodriguez. Despite the immense grief and pain, Tonya Lee expressed forgiveness towards the young man responsible, hoping he finds peace and redemption.

David leaves behind his wife, two children, mother, and sister, leaving a void in the hearts of his loved ones and colleagues. His dedication to his job and his quiet strength will be remembered by all who knew him. The emotional balloon release served as a poignant tribute to a man who made a lasting impact on his community.
