Hooghly Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: BJP’s Locket Chatterjee’s Fate Hangs in the Balance
Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal has been a battleground for political parties, especially with the rise of BJP in the region. In the 2019 elections, Locket Chatterjee of BJP emerged victorious with 6,71,448 votes, defeating Ratna De of Trinamool Congress and Pradip Saha of CPI(M). Now, in 2024, the question on everyone’s mind is whether Chatterjee can repeat her success.
The All India Trinamool Congress gained momentum in Hooghly after 2009, establishing itself as a strong opposition to the CPM. In 2014, Dr. Ratna De of Trinamool Congress secured the seat with 614,312 votes, overshadowing the CPI(M) completely.
The current election sees Locket Chatterjee facing tough competition from TMC’s Rachana Banerjee and CPI(M)’s Monodip Ghosh. The constituency, which includes assembly segments like Singur, Chandannagar, Chunchura, and others, has a rich history of industrial significance. However, with the closure of major factories and industrial units, the area has witnessed a decline in economic activity over the years.
The acquisition of agricultural land in Singur, which became a symbol of resistance against government policies, played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of Hooghly. The recent election on May 20 will determine the future course of the constituency and its impact on the state politics.
As the counting of votes is underway, all eyes are on Hooghly to see if BJP’s Locket Chatterjee can secure another victory or if the tide will turn in favor of TMC or CPI(M). The results are eagerly awaited to see the political dynamics unfold in this crucial Lok Sabha constituency.
